This piece is a commission for a customer. He wanted an original work done in the style of Lovecraft. The customer said one of his favorite Lovecraft stories is "Dagon" so I decided to draw inspiration from that. To state the monolith's design simply it is: fish people like the one in "Dagon" are congregating in a ruin of R'lyeh, Cthulhu oversees his subjects, Yog-Sothoth observes this while being the barrier between this world and the beyond, and lastly Azathoth is stationed in the eternal void.
The print's original was first sketched and then inked with various pens of differing nibs and shades of grey. I then drew the overlying symbol image with pencil and then watercolored it. I then scanned both images and lowered opacity of the symbol on top. Highlight and shadow values were altered to increase contrast.
